1stdibs, an online titan in the interior design world, decided to open its first store back in February of this year. The space is a 45 000 square foot gallery in the heart of Chelsea neighborhood in New York.

As a platform that offers high-end home furnishings, art, and design from the best luxury brands around the world, and has done it successfully online for the years it has been online it was very surprising that the company decided to open a physical space.

CEO of the company, David Rosenblatt, says that this new business 1stdibs is exploring is all about the ‘physical experience’ as ‘feeling the texture of a textile, sitting in a chair, holding the heft of a decorative object’ can be one of the main aspects for both designers and consumers.

New York has always been a strong place when it comes to interior design and luxury lifestyle, so it makes a lot of sense that 1stdibs chose this bustling city to be the location of its first store. Especially when physical experiences are growing to be one of the main requirements of luxury businesses.

This is not the first space 1stdibs has opened, as it previously had opened a trade-only showroom at Lexington Avenue. However, the two spaces are nothing alike. This one is open to the public and features more than 50 vendors. As for the brands represented in the space, there’s an eclectic mix, from antique sellers to contemporary designers.

Whether or not this superstore will be a success we don’t know but it’s definitely a great place to visit for both interior design professionals and the general public who happens to love interior design!
