Stepping Inside Amy Lau’s World…
Her love of design, art, and workmanship has always been a part of her life, even since she was a child. For many others, what is a lifelong search for a professional purpose and passion is a natural process for the designer. “I’ve always been fascinated by objects and pieces, fascinated by the stories they tell, the history, and the craftsmanship.” Amy worked at a prestigious import-export business called “Antigua de Mexico” right after graduation, where she had the opportunity to contact with various master artisans in developing stunning items as well as build the interior design for retail set to exhibit the products. It was a chapter that taught her a variety of talents, including not only artwork and workmanship, but also interior design.
Amy saw the opportunity to venture out on her own and start her own design practice in 2001 while working as a gallery design director for Lynne Weinberg. She had already completed several curatorial projects for various international shows at the time, and people began to seek her help after seeing her work. “I had so many questions about what I was doing, and people kept asking if I could renovate their houses, so I decided to open it up in 2001.” Amy Lau design studio has been known for crafting unique high-end interiors noted for their warmth, expressiveness, and excellent attention to detail since the beginning, a reputation that continues to this day.
“Amy Lau as a professional is very spirited, creative, honorable about the materials and the pieces that are being used. Let’s say she knows her, knows her history, the history of design and interior design lively and never takes no as an answer. Persistent, persistent.”

Her high-end approach includes both art and design, with dynamic blends of vintage and contemporary works as well as site-specific projects enlivening each personalized environment. Any project can have diverse influences, but it all starts the same way. “I begin to piece things together almost like a puzzle.” So I have a little bit here and a little piece there, and as I get to know them better, I develop this high-level setting for them.”
The secret to developing a truly different and original design, according to the designer, is having a passionate customer who wants to make history and has a hidden passion for art. “They provide me with ideas, but I’m able to translate them into high-end interiors.” The relationship between the customer and the designer becomes so special that the project ends up channeling all of their likes and wants, but with a design that is a touch out of the box. “You want to test them, encourage them to push the button a little further.” Not too much, but just enough to see if they’ll take such a risk with this and other things,” Amy explained. That is the ultimate artful living experience’s genuine secret.
Amy’s portfolio of beautiful residential interiors comprises a diverse range of artistic and sophisticated homes from around the world, so there’s a lot to consider when it comes to deciding which one defined her professional path. “There are many things that stand out in my mind, but this is the first apartment that I’ve been able to create for myself that isn’t finished (laughs) and where every single item has been taken apart.”
Amy’s apartment, which is located near the historic Carnegie Hall, is her most unique creation to date. Because the flat was created in 1908/ 1910, the New York-based designer looked for inspiration in several designs from throughout the world at the time, including the steel and secessionist styles. Everything was meticulously crafted till the last minute, from the Chevron flooring with walnut wood inlay to the lighting, which is derived from all of the separatist lightings with a lot of glass.
Many of the most prestigious design honors, including the House Beautiful Next-Wave Award, Architectural Digest/AD 100 Award, ELLE Decor A-List, and the Luxe Interiors + Design Gold List, have been bestowed upon the firm’s work. However, among all of these memorable moments, one stood out above the others.
Amy Lau’s Projects Never Cease To Amaze Us!
“Getting an honorary doctorate from the New York School of Interior Design was a watershed moment in my career.” I was blown away that an educational institution acknowledged and honored my work, and I felt that was truly remarkable. So that was one of the highlights for me,” said the designer.
Amy Lau produced a monograph called “Expressive Modern: The Interiors of Amy Lau” in 2011 in addition to her timeless interiors and bespoke product design. A book that highlighted historical events that have influenced her work through statements from many artists and designers.
Many aspiring designers wonder how Amy Lau Design was able to build such a successful studio, and the designer revealed her secret to us. “Mentorship is crucial. I’ve had one, two, or three big mentors in my life that have helped me get to where I am now, and it’s unlike anything else.” The apprentice has now become the mentor, and she has indicated that one of the most difficult issues she has had to deal with is the fact that young people no longer desire a lengthy learning process as they did in the past.
Most young professionals nowadays want to work somewhere for a year or a year and a half before moving on to another job to gain new experience, making mentoring a little more challenging.
Amy is currently involved in a number of projects across the United States, notably in New York and Connecticut. In terms of the future stages, the designer revealed that a new book is on the way, as well as a new place, akin to an atelier/gallery, where visitors may see some of her work and participate in creative brainstorming sessions. Amy’s highest objective and greatest achievement will always be to build livable, meaningful houses filled with harmony, artistic integrity, beauty, and inspiration for every environment and client.
“It’s very hard on interior designers because we give so much to these employees to train them the right way and it takes so much time, and just when they’re finished being trained, they’re ready to jump to the next. It’s mentorships where you can exchange ideas, talk them over with someone that knows much more than you do. It does take time and you’re going to have to put in the hours, and you are going to have to work very hard because this is not an easy job. It’s a very challenging one, but it is a beautiful one.”
