Bjarke Ingels Group: 80,000 Plants Featured In The New Singapore Skyscraper – The Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has completed CapitaSpring, a 919-foot biophilic skyscraper in Singapore, after four years of construction. The tower, one of Singapore’s tallest structures and the most recent addition to the island’s skyline, is situated in Downtown Core, the city-financial state’s district. Bjarke Ingels Group’s 80,000 Plants Skyscraper
BIG and CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati worked together to develop the building’s digital user experience. Carlo Ratti, the founding partner of CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, said in a statement: “When we first got invited to join the architectural competition, we saw a great opportunity to team up and join forces with BIG to achieve a uniquely bold result together.” “As CapitaSpring opens to the public today, I am proud of how we improved the public spaces throughout the building, ensuring the best user experience by utilizing technology and integrating natural elements in an unprecedented way.”
The mixed-use complex’s 51 stories offer space for living, working, and playing. The first eight floors are made up of residential areas with amenities like a swimming pool, jacuzzi, jogging path, gym, communal kitchen, residents’ lounge, and barbecue pits. According to the press release, over 99% of the office and retail space has already been reserved. The top 29 floors are designated for offices.
The tower has an eye-catching design, with multiple elevations each distinguished by a sculptural façade, but it’s the designers’ innovative use of vegetation that really stands out. Lush gardens can be seen on the exterior as the vertical elements separate. The Green Oasis, a 114-foot open-air garden inside, spans four stories between homes and offices. Plants in this area provide space for work, walks, relaxation, and events while reflecting the hierarchical structure of a tropical rainforest. Over 150 species of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers are grown for the rooftop restaurant in the building’s rooftop garden, which is the building’s top feature.
Bjarke Ingels Group’s Astonishing Work
In a statement, BIG’s founding partner Bjarke Ingels said, “We decided to make the design a vertical exploration of tropical urbanism due to the unique character of Singapore’s urbanism—both extremely dense and green.” The total landscaped area of the building is just under 90,000 square feet, with over 80,000 plants inside and outside. According to Ingels, “CapitaSpring is like a vision of the future where city and countryside, culture and nature can coexist, and urban landscapes can expand without boundaries into the vertical dimension.”
CapitaSpring has received certifications for both the Green Mark Platinum and Universal Design Gold Plus from the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore. Along with the extensive greenery, the tower has a number of amenities that support Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, like 165 bike parking spaces and a 1,969-foot cycling path that circles the outside of the structure.
