The studio, which has a base in London and an office in New York City, is involved in projects on three different continents, and an international network of partner agencies supports its lead-agency expertise. Operating on a global scale requires the studio to fully offset its carbon footprint and take the long-term effects of its creative decisions into account. All of the materials used by Fran Hickman are reduced, reused, and recycled on-site, and the company is always expanding its understanding of sustainability and the built environment. Each and every successful design has a strong narrative at its core. Clients are urged to take the lead in creating their own designs in conjunction with the studio.

Vinyl Factory, Soho

The Vinyl Factory hired Fran Hickman to create three loft apartments in an old NCP parking lot off Carnaby Street in the center of Soho. This significant remodel (8,500 square feet) called for a plan that would account for the needs of potential residents.

Now, sympathetically updated spaces with original architectural elements are available for work, reflection, and play. In the meantime, the structure of the building is reflected in a quirky assortment of furnishings that can be purchased anywhere, from flea markets to high-end providers of modern, classic design.

PaintBox, New York

Developing a sharp line in color combination is a minimalist nail salon on the corner of Madison and East 69th Street. This is Paintbox’s brand-new uptown studio, which is experimental yet understated in how it pairs upbeat unexpected color shades. The studio was determined to convey the drama and tension of color combining in a complementary palette of materials and unusual colors, drawing inspiration from Josef Albers’ indispensable book Interaction of Color.

Any single color can only ever be seen in relation to its surrounding colors. The studio’s focus shifted to what occurs in the interim. The aim was to uplift the mood, stimulate the senses, and instill tranquility by experimenting with the materials selected and the colors they contain. The color purple permeates every aspect of the shop, from the light custom acrylic shelving to the plush upholstery on the customers’ chairs. The textured plaster walls, perforated sheer window treatments, and colored concrete sinks all feature softer pink tones.

NASAB, Dubai

High temperatures, an unfinished construction site, and Dubai’s desert outskirts. The “Tower of Shadows” by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh comes to mind.

A custom copper reception desk, which carves cool darkness out of the existing concrete structure, expresses primitive raw purity, and moveable blocks made of granite, stainless steel, and oak provide refreshments from the kitchen. The interiors have a subtle, tactile sensuality that is reminiscent of that elevated state of being found in the desert because the color scheme and materials are all of an elemental nature.

The requirements of a modern library with shared tables, private work spaces, and meeting rooms were satisfied within a year by keeping our design intent simple but specified in great detail through a package of over a hundred and fifty drawings, echoing the dunes’ undulations and then the unfathomable distance traveled towards a horizon of endless color.

Chess Club, Mayfair

It was always going to be difficult to create a brand-new members-only club in Mayfair that was inspired by the surreal game play of Duane Michals and Man Ray. Open up and reimagine three floors of a six-story townhouse that has been vacant for the past ten years are the project’s first phase. The six-month construction project was managed from beginning to end by Fran Hickman’s in-house architects, and it started with planning and building control. The first floor bar, the lower ground cloakrooms, the restaurant on the ground floor, and the new industrial kitchens were all designed and built by Fran Hickman.

The masterful fusion of organic and geometric shape found in old Japanese prints had an impact on the colors and compositions in the public areas. Fran Hickman drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including Yves St. Laurent’s personal items, the artwork of Charles Baskerville, the metalwork of Jean Royère, the pop colors of David Hicks, and the butterflies of Carlo Mollino. The goal is to design a special space that feels grounded and practical but also joyful and elegant.

Dressing screens that were made-to-order and ribbon-lined were used to create private, personal spaces. In the changing rooms, Moda’s color scheme of creams, cool greys, and dusty peaches was allowed to develop into a dramatic Art Deco pink. Lighting, furniture, and accessories were all made specifically for the room.
