Carr Design Studio Creates Art-filled Luxury Hotel in Australia

Australian based, Carr Design Studio, transforms old cottage on Mornington Peninsula into art-filled luxury hotel

Led by the much-awarded Sue Carr and founded in 1971, Carr Design Group is considered to be one of Australia’s most influential interior design firms.

Recently the studio Carr used a charred wood exterior and dark interiors to transform an old cottage on Mornington Peninsula into a luxury hotel. And it actually worked pretty well.

The luxury hotel, named as Jackalope, is based around an 18th century Federation cottage and was restored by the architecture studio back to an usable state based on “bold and modern” design concept.

The building is located in a wine-growing region in the south of Melbourne and overlooks sculptural landscapes of the vines and old native planting yards.

Jackalope is nothing less than a 46 room boutique hotel covered in dark zinc, charred timber and black metal detailing being an authentic piece of architecture where a bold and modern interpretation of design lays within.

In its art-filled interior design one can find dramatic colors and lighting designs that create an “out of this world experience” for guests.

According to the studio, the interiors are meant to celebrate mystery and whimsy of alchemy. Metallic elements such as gold, silver, copper and bronze become the main attraction in the space.

The lobby contains a black-tinted glass box that displays bottles of wine which the architects described as “part object, part installation”.

A lounge and bar are located inside the original 18th-century building, where interiors are deliberately designed to contrast with the architectural history.
