The Gates, Central Park, USA
This installation in New Work was created in 2005, by Christo and his late wife Jeanne-Claude, by installing 7,503 fabric panels suspended from saffron-coloured steel gateways built along New York City’s Central Park. 600 workers were paid to install the gates and a further 300 to monitor and later remove the work.
Surrounded Islands, Miami, USA
By 603,870 square metres of luminous pink fabric selected to complement the shallow waters and Miami skies, Christo surrounded a series of islands in Miami, Florida, creating floating rafts with the fabric attached, so that they could be anchored in place to create this amazing installation, which lasted for two weeks.
Valley Curtain, Colorado, USA
381 meters long and suspended at 111 meters tall, this installation by Christo took 28 months a team of designers, builders, and students to create. It was able to remain for 28 hours between two mountains in Colorado before the high winds forced it to be taken down.
The Floating Piers, Lake Iseo, Italy
This was Christo’s first work after the passing of his wife Jeanne-Claude in 2009. Stretching for 3 kilometres in the Italian Lake Iseo, a golden, carpet-like structure was installed between the islands in this lake, allowing visitors to walk between islands and enjoy the installation.
Wrapped Coast, Sydney, Australia,
One of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s earliest works, this installation occupied 1.5 miles of the Australian coastline, which was wrapped in 92000 square meters of erosion-control fabric. A team of 15 professional climbers and 110 workers wrapped the coastline for four weeks to achieve the final result.
