HOK was established in 1955 in St. Louis, Missouri, and was named after the surnames of the three founding partners: George Hellmuth, Gyo Obata, and George Kassabaum. HOK’s founding partners are all graduates of St. Louis’ Washington University School of Architecture. Three founders and 26 employees founded the design firm. By the mid-1960s, the firm had begun to receive commissions throughout the United States, and HOK had expanded its operations, beginning in San Francisco.
HOK began expanding its interior design practice to Washington, DC in 1968. When HOK purchased Kahn & Jacobs in 1973, it established a foothold in New York, and by the 1970s, the firm had expanded internationally as well.
In the 1990s, HOK established its first office outside of the United States in Hong Kong. In 1987, it was time to open HOK’s London office. In fact, by 2007, overseas projects accounted for more than 40% of HOK’s annual revenue.
HOK acquired the New York and Shanghai offices of hospitality design firm BBG-New BBGM in 2013, forming one of the largest interior design firms, and in 2015, HOK announced the completion of its acquisition of 360 Architecture.
HOK’s goal is to provide excellent design ideas and solutions to all clients while keeping in mind that each project must prioritize creativity and human needs.

HOK entered the digital era in 1983 with HOK Draw, a computer-aided drafting software package specializing in conceptual architectural design. HOK uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) to speed up the design and construction processes. HOK was named the No. 1 BIM Architecture Firm in 2012 by Building Design + Construction. HOK is a pioneer in sustainable design, and its experts authored “The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design,” which was first published in 2000 by John Wiley & Sons.
Net Zero Court is a market-rate, zero-emissions class of 170,735 square feet. In 2010, HOK collaborated with energy and daylighting consultancy The Weidt Group to design a commercial office skyscraper in St. Louis. In 2015, the DesignIntelligence publication named HOK a leader in sustainable and high-performance design for the sixth year in a row.
