Kelly Wearstler’s Masterpieces
Kelly Wearstler’s first hospitality project was in 1999, when her now-husband Brad Korzen asked her to decorate a model room for the Avalon in Beverly Hills. When this project came along, she had already established her own firm in 1995. She went on to do hospitality projects like the Santa Monica Proper after creating that “playful take on mid-century modernism.”
Kelly Wearstler’s The Santa Monica Proper
The Santa Monica Proper is a 271-room boutique hotel located seven blocks from Santa Monica Beach. Ahead of America’s hospitality awards, the project was named Hotel of the Year in 2020, as well as the winner of the Guestrooms and Lobby & Public Spaces categories! The designer wanted the hotel to have a Californian feel on the inside, so it is inspired not only by the state’s beautiful landscapes but also by its people. Organic and textured materials, neutral colors, and vintage furniture were used in the decoration to mimic Santa Monica’s beachside identity and to create a sensory experience.
One of the main goals was also to bring the outdoors indoors, as Kelly believes that this is what makes the project unique and personalized. California has a very relaxed and cool ambiance, which is exactly what customers will experience when they visit the hotel.
Kelly Wearstler Made Magic To This Santa Monica Proper Hotel
The 271 rooms are divided into two wings, one modern and the other more retro, and are housed within the original Spanish Mission building.
When it comes to finishing a look and evoking a feeling in customers, the details are everything. It is necessary to pay close attention to details in order to truly induce sensation. As California is well known for its palm trees and hot weather, a lot of textures, warm tones, and green elements were used in this case.
The artworks and furniture pieces created specifically for the Santa Monica Proper Hotel by Kelly Wearstler are displayed throughout the property.
The Santa Monica Building, a 1920s Spanish Colonial Style structure, was already there. As a result, the Santa Monica Proper hotel was built around it, and the designer had to figure out how to make them work together.
