Tom Dixon was born in Sfax, Tunisia, in 1959 to a French/Latvian mother and an English father. At the age of four, he went to England and attended school in London. After a six-month stint at Chelsea Art School, a motorcycle accident interrupted his artistic ambitions and landed him in the hospital for three months. Dixon spent two years as a musician after dropping out of art school, playing bass guitar in a disco band until another motorcycle accident rendered him unable to play for a while.

As his international profile increased, Cappellini, an Italian furniture design company, approached Dixon. As Cappellini sought to put some of his designs into major production, he began to be considered seriously on the international scene. Tom Dixon’s name was made with the “S” chair, which evolved from early prototypes during his Creative Salvage days. It was weaved with discarded rubber inner tubes at first, then coated with a rush, a material commonly used for drop-in chairs. Its sculptural form and extraordinary legless structure of bent steel frame drew Cappellini in. The “S” chair, which was introduced by Cappellini in 1989 with a vividly felt upholstery covering, immediately became famous and now has a permanent home in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Dixon has worked with Cappellini on a number of other designs since then, including the Bird Rocking chair, the Pylon table and chair, and the tub chair, to mention a few.

Tom Dixon and David Begg founded the company in 2002. The company has created its own range of contemporary lighting and furnishings since its start, including the famous Mirror Ball Collection of lights and, more recently, Copper Shade. Tom Dixon’s creations have made their mark on the international stage thanks to well-known exhibitions at important sites such as the Milan Furniture Fair and the London Design Museum, where he is now nominated for Designer of the Year. Tom Dixon is best known for his earlier designs, including the S-chair for Cappellini and the rotationally molded Jack Lamp, which was awarded the Millennium Mark for Great British Design in 1998. In 2007, he was given the OBE for his contributions to 2000’s British design.
